Portrait of an American Family was the first album to be released by the band following their signing in 1993 to Trent Reznor’s Nothing Records label. The album, like the EP follow up Smells Like Children, is a sillier Manson than the one that evolved over the years. More Alice Cooper and schlock horror with a little Willy Wonka and other darker childrens characters thrown in for good measure.

Right off the bat, Manson sounds more like an alternative industrial artist than anything else (I’ve seen Manson’s work classified as “heavy metal” – I don’t think so), and while the parents’ groups and religious right will always have a field day with the content of this song, it really isn’t a bad effort musically. You don’t have to agree with every word in a song to appreciate the songwriting.
